Sudan: Sudanese Army Air Strike in Nyala Causes Panic and Fear

On the morning of Sunday, July 14, 2024, Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State, was rocked by an unexpected air strike, inciting waves of panic and fear throughout the city, particularly among women, children, and the elderly.

Eyewitness F. Abdul Rahman reported to Darfur 24 that the army’s warplanes fired a missile on Airport Street, directly opposite the Customs Authority buildings. A Darfur 24 correspondent observed the aircraft conducting a nighttime raid, during which it fired three missiles into the eastern neighborhoods of the city. The powerful explosions and subsequent tremors were felt across distant neighborhoods, creating intense lighting and adding to the chaos.

Residents of Nyala expressed their shock and fear, stating that the city had not experienced such bombings for the past five months. This raid interrupted a period of relative stability in Nyala, which had seen the return of many residents who had fled the intense fighting and artillery shelling last year. Many of these returning families had recently come back from the city of El Fasher, seeking refuge in their hometowns as the conflict seemed to wane.

During the air strike, anti-aircraft guns from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) responded with heavy artillery, creating a tense and overcast atmosphere as the plane flew over Nyala. The situation remains highly volatile as South Darfur State is currently under the control of the RSF.

The surprise air raid raises significant concerns about the future stability of Nyala and the surrounding regions. The city’s residents, who had begun to rebuild their lives, now face renewed uncertainty and fear. The broader implications of this escalation for the ongoing conflict in Sudan are yet to be fully understood, but it underscores the fragile and precarious nature of peace in the region.
